Ethics Policies For Studies Involving The Participation Of Human Subjects

Authors must ensure that studies involving human participants, their data, or biological material received approval (or were granted exemption) from the relevant institutional and/or national research ethics committee. This approval validates the study and reinforces its adherence to the ethical standards outlined in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki and its subsequent amendments or equivalent ethical standards.

Written informed consent must be applied if there is any doubt (e.g. when authors are unsure if the individual's anonymity is preserved).

Suppose there is uncertainty regarding whether the research complied with the 1964 Helsinki Declaration or similar standards. In that case, the authors must explain their approach and demonstrate that an independent ethics committee or institutional review board explicitly approved any questionable aspects of the study.

If a study was exempt from requiring ethics approval, the authors should detail this in the manuscript, along with the reasons for the exemption.
